Explanation of the IMP 8 CPME Comma Separated Variable (CSV) ASCII Files

The files have been prepared at time resolutions of 5.5 minutes, 1 hour, and 1 day.

The file names are as follows:

e.g. I873000G01.csv where I8 stands for IMP 8, 73 is the last two digits of the year in which the data starts, 000 is the day of year number for the time window specified for the listed output (the data will always begin within this window--sometimes much later, as is the case for 1973 where turn-on did not occur until day 303), G01 stand for printing group 1, and the ‘.CSV’ extension assures that EXCEL will recognize this file and open it correctly.

There are 12 printing groups as follows:

  1. Proton count rates--channel P1 through P11 (spin averaged).
  2. Alpha and Medium count rates--channels A1 through A6 and Z1 through Z4. (spin averaged).
  3. Geiger Mueller Tube rates (these only worked for 1973 through 1977). (spin averaged along with solar sector rates)
  4. Electron rates from the PET channels E4, E5, and E6, along with the M and S anticoincidence shield scintillator rates. M worked from launch until about 1989 (or so) (spin averaged).
  5. P1 channel sectored rates.
  6. E4 channel sectored rates.
  7. A1 channel sectored rates.
  8. A3 channel sectored rates.
  9. Z1 channel sectored rates.
  10. Z2 channel sectored rates.
  11. Proton channel fluxes (species contamination, geometrical factors, and passbands taken into account).
  12. Alpha, Medium and Heavy ion fluxes (species contamination, geometrical factors, and passbands taken into account).

The daily averaged data are similarly prepared (and named) and are in a separate folder.

Further information is available from a variety of sources including several APL preprints.
